Disc Herniation (Commonly called a slipped disc)

The soft centre of an intervertebral disc protrudes through its outer layer and can compress a nearby spinal nerve. The commonest cause of sciatica.

**Disc herniation, **commonly referred to as “Slipped Disc”, occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of an intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) protrudes through a tear in its tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus).

This condition often compresses nearby spinal nerves, causing symptoms such as back or neck pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or radiating pain in the arms or legs. The severity of symptoms depends on the location and extent of the herniation.

Common causes include aging, which weakens the disc, repetitive strain, heavy lifting, or traumatic injury.

Treatment options range from rest, physical therapy, and medications to surgical interventions in severe cases. Early intervention can help prevent worsening of symptoms.

A spine consultation begins with a clinical examination and — usually — a review of recent imaging. WhatsApp is the fastest way to enquire; for a same-day slot, calling the OPD chamber during its listed hours is best.
