Disc Herniation
Description
Disc herniation occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of an intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) protrudes through a tear in its tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus). This condition often compresses nearby spinal nerves, causing symptoms such as back or neck pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or radiating pain in the arms or legs. The severity of symptoms depends on the location and extent of the herniation. Common causes include aging, which weakens the disc, repetitive strain, heavy lifting, or traumatic injury. Treatment options range from rest, physical therapy, and medications to surgical interventions in severe cases. Early intervention can help prevent worsening of symptoms.
